What fragrance oils are used in aromatherapy dispensers

In the fragrance and flavor industry, in order to make the fragrance and flavor can be dissolved in water, made of juice, flower lotion, perfume, etc., will be a variety of natural or synthetic fragrance blend made of fragrance, dissolved in 40% ~ 60% of ethanol (or propanol, propylene glycol, glycerin and other water-soluble solvents), so as to get water-soluble fragrance, and water-soluble fragrance oil is also available through this method of preparation, now there are also a small number of people DIY fragrance oil perfumes, which are made directly from fragrance oils and alcohol.

Water solubility and emulsification are two concepts

There are many people who say that water soluble fragrance oils are emulsified fragrance oils, but this is not the case.

There are two methods of emulsification.

  1. by emulsifying two substances that are otherwise incompatible, so that one liquid is evenly dispersed in tiny droplets in the other, which is incompatible with each other.

  2. Direct ultrasonic emulsification process, without emulsifier or adding a small amount of emulsifier, under the action of ultrasonic energy, so that two (or more) immiscible liquids are mixed to form a dispersion system, where one liquid is uniformly distributed in the other liquid to form an emulsion.

The result is an emulsion, which is a mixture of two otherwise immiscible liquids, i.e. the emulsified oil itself is a mixture of fragrance oil and water, if you want the oil to dissolve in water then you need to stir it when you add it to the water.

What fragrance oils are used in aromatherapy diffusers?

To properly understand this issue, it is important to know how an aromatherapy diffuser works and how to use it

The aromatherapy machine works: through the high frequency vibrations generated by the ultrasonic vibrating equipment, the water molecules and fragrance oils are broken down into a cold nano-mist of 0.1-5 microns in diameter and distributed in the surrounding air, filling the air with fragrance. The ultrasonic waves produced during this process enable the water and fragrance oils to mix quickly, i.e. emulsification.

How to use the aromatherapy diffuser: add the right amount of water to the water chamber, drop in the fragrance oils and plug in the power supply.

Do the fragrance oils used in an aromatherapy diffuser have to be dissolved in water?

Not necessarily, as we can see from the above principles, the only reason for adding water to an aromatherapy diffuser is to reduce the concentration of the fragrance oils and to increase the humidity of the air.

Even if water is not added, the fragrance oils can be broken down into nano-levels and distributed into the air, provided you are using an aromatherapy diffuser and not a humidifier or hydration device, as the oscillation power of the two is different and the aromatherapy diffuser uses a higher frequency oscillation technique because it has to break down the fragrance oils.

But if you add fragrance oils directly, in the long run, firstly, the concentration of fragrance oils is too high, the body may not be easy to accept, secondly, the machine will shorten its life over the years, and thirdly, the money can't be carried above, for example, a single rose fragrance oil can easily be tens of thousands of kilograms, so you can see that it is really rich people who can do this.

The aromatherapy machine itself can make water and fragrance oils dissolve, as mentioned earlier, the ultrasonic waves produced in the aromatherapy machine can make the water and fragrance oils mix quickly, that is, emulsification, so that the fragrance oils and water can also be dissolved, there is no need for any water-soluble fragrance oils.

  Classification of fragrance oils.

Single fragrance oil: contains only one fragrance oil, most of which cannot be used directly on the skin, such as jasmine fragrance oil, rose fragrance oil, etc.; compound fragrance oil: more than 2 kinds of single fragrance oil and base oil in proportion to the blend made, can be used directly fragrance oil, generally with targeted effect; water-soluble fragrance oil: fragrance oil dissolved in 40% to 60% of ethanol (or propyl alcohol, propylene glycol, glycerin and other water-soluble solvents) in Emulsified fragrance oils: products made by mixing emulsifiers, water, fragrance oils and stabilisers together, or products made directly by the ultrasonic emulsification process.

  To summarise.

  1. The term fragrance oil exists, but is not a classification of fragrance oils, but a classification of aromatherapy, such as aromatherapy candles, aromatherapy plasters, aromatherapy paper sheets, aromatherapy fragrance oils are only one of their classifications.

  2. In order to make fragrance oils water soluble, it is advisable to use water soluble oils directly, there is no need to go to the trouble of preparing emulsified oils and stirring them when adding them to water.

There is no need to use water-soluble fragrance oils as the aromatherapy machine itself allows water and fragrance oils to dissolve. "The oil itself is oil-soluble, so "water-soluble fragrance oils" sounds very awkward.
